Agoraphobic Nosebleed: Agorapocalypse

27/04/09  ||  Euthanatos

I just did the review for Mumakil’s “Behold the Failure”, so I thought, hell, I’m in a grind kind of mood, I might as well review Agoraphobic Nosebleed. And the best part of that is, “Agorapocalypse” is, to me, the best album these fuckers have ever released. Now isn’t that something?

First of all, there seems to be what looks like a 16 year old chick singing. I’m pretty sure she isn’t 16, but she sure looks it, all sweet and tiny and shit. But fuck-my-entrails, the minute the starts screaming her ovaries off, it feels like hell’s hounds have been set loose. And she is on the rag. And it’s your fault. So she’s going to fucking kill you. It’s some scary shit.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed always had a sound that failed to appeal to me because it was more of an ultra-fast dirty punk/hardcore/noise hybrid than metal, plus drum machines are only for the extremely gifted, otherwise it just sounds like crap. This time around, though, the band has done a complete 180. There are various metal elements abound, the music is truly grindcore at its finest, the new vocalist Katherine Katz does some perfect duets (haha) with Jay, making AnB sound much more diverse and fun. There are some insane solos here, and either these guys got a real drummer to record this album, or this is the best drum machine sound I have ever fucking listened to.

There are only 13 songs, which can seem short from a grindcore album, and it really is, but they have enough personality to make it fucking worthwhile and memorable.

It’s great to see a band come of age, after more than 10 years in waiting, Agoraphobic Nosebleed have finally delivered a hell of an album that will please even the most demanding grindcore fan.

The cover: Stunning piece of artwork, reminds me of John Baizley’s stuff. Since this is one of Scott Hull’s bands, it probably is.

8 people afraid of being afraid out of 10.
